Chapter 9

Maverick

Maverick walked in his front door, immediately enveloped with the savory smells of dinner cooking and an undercurrent of cleaning solution which smelled like lemon. His house was becoming a place he wanted to return to every night. He looked for Morgan who waited for him in the kitchen with a bouquet of wildflowers.

Angling her head off center, she grinned. “I thought you should have some flowers.”

Her flirting made him laugh and he shook his head as he followed her to the table to sit at the place she’d set for him. The scent of the flowers filled the air. “I’m the one who should be bringing you flowers. Nothing about this is traditional.”

Chicken teriyaki with pineapple chunks on rice and a side of salad was better than anything he’d expected. After his long day, coming home to Morgan was more of a balm on his soul than he’d expected. “Are you feeling better? You look better.”

“I can only imagine how I looked.” She giggled. “Yes, thank you. I think I was just hungry. I’m a big eater.” She smiled as she took a small bite of her dinner.

Arching his eyebrow, Maverick picked up his fork. “No, Morgan, you’re a contradiction.” He took a bite and closed his eyes. “This is delicious. Well done.” He snapped his eyes open when she didn’t reply. “What’s going on? What are you thinking?” He had to know what made her tick because he couldn’t figure out why she would treat him so sweetly but still want to leave. She confused him and he didn’t like the feeling of not understanding.

Morgan lowered her fork, studying him. She pressed her lips together and then spoke slowly at first. “Why didn’t you take me up on the one night stand? I was expecting it to turn out a lot differently than it did.” The steadiness in her gaze unnerved him.

He took a moment to answer, steadying himself as he considered her question. “If I answer your question, you need to answer one of mine.” He sipped the water she’d given him and waited for her answer. He needed more time to figure out what to say.

“That sounds fair. You can ask me first, if you want.” She leaned forward, waiting for his question.

“Why do you keep turning down drinks? You don’t serve alcohol and every time I offer to get you something, you don’t want it. Is it a religious thing or something?” He smiled when she glanced at the glasses of water.

“I don’t like alcohol.” Her evasive answer obviously hid something but she did answer and he had made a deal.

Maverick inclined his head, wincing as he spoke. “I don’t like one night stands.”

Morgan laughed, rolling her eyes. “All guys like them. You’re just trying to copy me because you think that I’m really hiding something from you.”

“You’re perceptive, except I’m not being light-minded here. I’m serious. I don’t like one night stands. They’re impersonal.” He smiled at her, enjoying that he’d taken her by surprise.
